PhD thesis in psychology. How to “find” a relevant topic for a dissertation? Master's Thesis in Psychology

Wiring in a wooden house

Age psychology studies the psychological characteristics of a person's age development, personal characteristics of representatives of different ages.

At WRC writing in psychology, the topic on developmental psychology will be associated either with a comparative analysis of the psychological characteristics of different age groups, or with the study of individual personality traits of representatives of one group. In the latter case, the emphasis should be on age, and not on psychological characteristics.

Consider the features of writing final qualification works in developmental psychology; choice of topics. The article provides links to examples (samples) of term papers and diploma papers on developmental psychology.

Features of topics in developmental psychology

As part of the choice of topics for master's, diploma and term papers in developmental psychology, it is typical to refer to the study of psychological characteristics of different ages: "Differences in the level of development of logical thinking among junior schoolchildren of general education schools and lyceums"; "Peculiarities of the course of the age crisis of 40 years in unmarried women"; Boys' and Girls' Ideas of Friendship.

The division of a person's life path into age stages determines the division of developmental psychology into the following sections: psychology of early age, psychology of younger and older preschool age; psychological features of younger schoolchildren, adolescents and high school students; psychological characteristics of students; psychological aspects in maturity and old age.

Any topic of a term paper or a thesis, in which an empirical study includes a certain sample of subjects, can formally be classified as an age-related one. However, not all diploma topics focus on the age of the subjects. Sometimes age is emphasized: "Psychological determinants of life satisfaction in women of early adulthood"; "Peculiarities of self-attitude of older people"; "The specifics of the age development of adolescents left without parental care".

Diplomas in developmental psychology are very popular, largely because many teachers go to receive additional education and take on topics related to school or preschool.

One can note the interest of psychology students in topics related to age-related crises. Perhaps this is due to the fact that more and more adults are going to study psychology (as part of master's programs). And topics related to the mid-life crisis are close and interesting to them, since they themselves either live through this age stage, or it will soon await them.

Coursework in Developmental Psychology

When choosing a course topic in developmental psychology, it is important to determine the age group. The following options are possible:

  • infants (under 1 year old);
  • early age (from 1 year to 3 years);
  • younger preschoolers (from 3 to 5 years);
  • older preschoolers (from 5 to 6);
  • junior schoolchildren (from 7 to 10 years old);
  • teenagers (from 11 to 15 years old);
  • youthful age (from 16 to 18 years);
  • student youth (from 19 to 25 years old);
  • youth (from 20 to 35 years);
  • adulthood (from 35 to 60 years);
  • old age (from 60 to 75 years);
  • senile age (over 76 years).

The choice of the age group will largely determine the logic of the study, methods of diagnostics and data analysis.

WRC topics in psychology related to infancy and early childhood are very specific. Diagnostic methods in this case are observation. There are very few topics.

It is difficult to conduct questionnaires with preschoolers, because they are not yet fully capable of self-assessment of their own personal qualities. Therefore, the main diagnostic method is observation or questioning. To identify the severity of the psychological characteristics of preschool children, questionnaires can be filled out by parents or preschool teachers. A comparison of these estimates can provide important information.

Questionnaires already exist to study younger schoolchildren, and it is possible to obtain data on their psychological characteristics not only from observation and questioning, but also through self-assessment. Here, with the help of questionnaires, self-esteem and anxiety can be studied. It is also possible to conduct a sociometric procedure.

When choosing topics related to adolescents and young men, the researcher has a wide range of psychological tests for diagnosing anxiety, self-esteem, aggressiveness and other individual psychological characteristics.

To study adults, there are a large number of questionnaires and tests. Their choice is determined by the purpose and objectives of the study.

Having chosen the age group, it is necessary to decide on the problem that will be studied. The topic of any term paper on developmental psychology should naturally follow from a real practical problem.

In the course work, you can not take serious problems and limit yourself to identifying the relationship of indicators or a comparative analysis of data. At the same time, in a thesis, and even more so in a master's thesis, the presence of a problem is obligatory.

Diploma work in developmental psychology

The theme of the thesis in developmental psychology should follow from the problem. To identify such a problem, in relation to childhood, familiarity with the types of leading activities can help.

The term "leading activity" was introduced by the domestic psychologist D.B. Elkonin. This term refers to the most characteristic and important, from the point of view of age development, psychological aspects of life that are closely related to the situation (the social situation of development).

In infancy, the leading activity is direct emotional communication with a significant adult.

At an early age, the leading activity is object-tool activity - the development of objects and socially fixed ways of operating them.

The leading activity at preschool age is a role-playing game, during which children master the system of social interpersonal relations, the system of motives for human activity.

With admission to school, the leading activity of the child becomes educational activity. The younger student needs to master the role of a student, learn self-control, master the skills of mastering knowledge.

AT adolescence Communication with peers and leading activities come to the fore - intimate-personal communication with peers, the content of which is the establishment of close relationships with a partner, knowledge of a partner and self-knowledge.

In high school, students face the problem of choosing a future profession, and therefore the leading activity is educational and professional, involving the mastery of a system of scientific concepts in the context of preliminary professional self-determination.

Leading activities in childhood reflect the most significant aspects and related research topics will be relevant. For example, the importance of play in preschool childhood makes it possible to formulate themes of diploma papers on the relationship between the personal characteristics of children and the level of development of skills in play activities. You can also explore the conditions for the development of qualities important for a preschooler in the course of play activities.

The choice of a topic for a diploma with younger students may be related to their studies, since at this age it is the learning activities that are most important. Topics may relate to the motives of learning activities, focus on assessment or the learning process, attitudes towards school, etc. Important problems of this age are the success of adaptation to school.

In the study of adolescents, the range of topics expands. Here you can not be limited to the study of direct communication with peers. The complexity and criticality of adolescence predetermines practical problems: deviant behavior, aggressiveness, character accentuations, etc. Accordingly, diploma topics can be related to the study of psychological factors of deviant behavior, aggressiveness, etc.

As for the period of adulthood, the choice of problem and research topic is very wide. The fact is that in adult life everything can become a problem if taken to an extreme: going to the store is shopaholism; close relationships - interpersonal dependence; responsible attitude to business - perfectionism, etc. That is, you can explore anything you want.

When choosing a topic for a diploma in developmental psychology, it is important to start from personal experience, from what is important and interesting.

Master's theses in developmental psychology

A master's thesis in developmental psychology should be related to a serious problem of a particular age group. For example, studying the characteristics of coping in adolescents at risk is an urgent problem. These data may be important for teaching dysfunctional adolescents constructive ways of coping, which will help reduce the severity of their behavioral deviations.

Topics related to age-related crises are well suited for a master's thesis in developmental psychology. Traditionally, there are two such crises:

  • crisis of 30 years;
  • mid-life crisis (crisis of 40 years).

The concept of age crises reflects the complex and non-linear nature of a person's life path. There are periods of calm flow of life, and there are moments when habits, habitual circumstances collapse and life takes on new paths.

From a psychological point of view, it is important to explore what helps and what hinders constructive living. crisis periods life. What contributes to the fact that a person uses the crisis for self-actualization, and does not fall into depression.

Any Ph.D. thesis in psychology begins with the definition of the scope of scientific interests of the future scientist. Psychological science provides the widest field for research, because it includes different areas, here are just a few of them:

  • psychology of Personality,
  • legal psychology,
  • correctional psychology,
  • political psychology,
  • developmental psychology,
  • history of psychology.

Based on the chosen specialty and having familiarized with its passport in detail, the future candidate of psychological sciences is determined with the topic of his scientific work.

How to Choose a PhD Topic in Psychology

Potentially successful in psychology meets two requirements. First of all, scientific work should be based on applied research, that is, an experiment in one of the areas of psychology, new and not carried out before.

Secondly, the results reflected in the dissertation should be of practical value (ideally, applicable in one of the problematic areas of science). Based on this, the topics of Ph.D. dissertations in psychology should become new and relevant for the present. If a graduate student wants to fully and comprehensively reveal his topic, it is better for him to formulate it in the most specific and narrow way.

To assess the scientific novelty and relevance of the chosen topic, it is necessary to look through the list of defended candidate and doctoral works in psychology in recent years, to catch the main "trends" in psychological science, and also to make sure that the chosen topic has not already been studied and disclosed by someone. The supervisor will help to finally decide on this issue.

How to Write a PhD Thesis in Psychology

Gives the right direction to work and eliminates errors correct definition object and subject of research, its goals and objectives.

After formulating these key concepts for scientific research, they begin to create a dissertation plan. Also, already at the beginning of writing the work, the future candidate of psychological sciences forms a list of used literature - a bibliography. Modern requirements are such that the list should contain at least one hundred, but no more than three hundred items, ideally the author of the finished thesis refers to 230-250 scientific papers.

The structure of PhD work in psychology has its own characteristics. After the introduction, there is a very informative theoretical part with a significant amount of references to articles, books and monographs by domestic and foreign researchers. But much more important is the practical part. Its basis is a psychological experiment - an applied research that confirms or refutes the theses of the previous part of the work. In the psychological sciences, the requirements for research methods are high, and this should be given special attention. The successful outcome of the defense of a Ph.D. thesis in psychology depends on the scientific novelty, practical value and correctness of the organization and conduct of applied research.

If your work is ready, then the question of presenting it to the Academic Council remains. Every young research psychologist faces the question of how to defend a Ph.D. thesis in psychology without any problems. It will help to make sure that:

  • The topic and area of study of the dissertation completely coincides with the chosen specialty.
  • The work is framed in accordance with all standards.
  • The required number of articles was published in the publications recommended by the Higher Attestation Commission (as a rule, at least 3).

And most importantly - you need to be confident in yourself!

Writing a PhD in psychology is not much different from working on a dissertation on any other topic. It is always a huge work, searching and studying hundreds of scientific papers, developing and conducting your own research. If a graduate student does not have enough time for all of the above, the success of the dissertation is in question.

2. Vasina Elena Nikolaevna

Reflected "I" in the structure of self-consciousness.

How to “find” a relevant topic for a dissertation?

The beginning of postgraduate study is a period of active scientific research, which, as a rule, is accompanied by a lot of questions for a postgraduate student.

It is very difficult to answer these questions.

There are few relevant methodological manuals on the market of educational literature devoted to the implementation of qualifying scientific works, their overly theorized and therefore divorced from reality recommendations are hardly perceived (read - incomprehensible) by young scientists.

A modern graduate student is most often not ready for independent scientific work, and the appointed supervisor, taking into account his employment, does not have time to engage in "educational" work.

Scientific guidance, even in institutions of higher learning with a serious scientific school, comes down to rare meetings with graduate students and reading of already finished papers. The effectiveness of interaction often depends on the good will of the supervisor and his "sympathy" for the graduate student.

As a result, there is a decrease in the already low scientific activity of graduate students and applicants. The occurrence of such difficulties does not allow them to fully realize the possibility of independent research activities. In the absence of proper motivation and a busy work schedule, a graduate student receives a strong impulse to pay money and shift the responsibility for writing a dissertation to a third party.

This "forced" demarche is quite understandable. However, no matter how difficult the beginning of scientific activity, I still do not advise trusting the abstract company to develop the problems of a dissertation research.

Is it possible to independently choose a topic for a dissertation without having experience in scientific activity?

I responsibly declare that nothing is impossible ... for a person ... with intellect.

If we approach the choice of the topic of the dissertation strategically, then start, of course, with the choice of a scientific specialty. Someone makes this choice even before entering a university or in the process of studying. Postgraduate study becomes a logical continuation of the research work carried out by the student during the period of study within the chosen specialty, and the final qualifying work becomes the basis of the abstract provided upon admission to graduate school.

However, as practice shows, future graduate students often do not quite understand what research topic to choose. In this case, the ideal option would be to combine the topic of scientific research with the area of \u200b\u200bthe main work.

Be that as it may, the search for a relevant dissertation topic should begin with a conversation with your supervisor. Sometimes this path is the easiest and shortest. The supervisor (if desired) can, at the first meeting, talk about the problems existing in your area of knowledge, which you will be able to “develop” with joint efforts to the topic of the dissertation.

Unfortunately, not all supervisors are so generous with their participation, saving topic-problems for a “special occasion”. If so, don't despair.

There are several ways to search for a relevant dissertation topic:

1. If you are working in your main specialty, you may be aware of the problems (for example, social problems, problems of law enforcement practice, etc.), which can become the basis for developing a dissertation topic. For lawyers, for example, court practice materials, including reviews prepared by courts of various levels, can become a source of such information. State the identified problems, summarize and discuss with the supervisor. It is possible that problems in practice arise due to the insufficient development of existing theoretical approaches. For example, problems in the practice of law enforcement are due to the insufficient development of the theory of law. It is this descriptive method that I used more than once for the purposes of developing the topic of a dissertation on civil law at the beginning of his work in the field of scientific consulting.

2. Analyze your postgraduate programs by areas. Among the problems declared for study, there may be actual ones. In my practice, there were several cases when in the course programs, topics recommended for postgraduate students as dissertation topics were highlighted in a separate list.

3. View recently defended papers in your specialty, first defended in your department over the past year. Perhaps the problems posed in them are still relevant, and the research devoted to them is still not enough. In this case, you can raise the question of the development of these topics in your dissertation.

Example: The topic of the recently defended work on the specialty 12.00.01 "The role of law in the development of science and education." You can well formulate your topic as follows: "The role of law in the development of science and innovation", etc. You can be sure that it is relevant.

Remember that it is necessary to choose a research topic within the framework of the passport of a scientific specialty. If your specialty as a research worker - 12.00.01 - “Theory and history of law and state; history of legal doctrines”, then its content is “<…>ideas, ideas, constructions, concepts and categories, hypotheses and forecasts, reflecting the current level of knowledge about the general laws of the emergence, development and functioning of law and the state<…>».

Explore the research areas of your specialty passport. The topic should be formulated (read - consonant) within the framework of a particular paragraph. In any case, the topic you choose is subject to validation at the department. First of all, your supervisor must recognize the dissertation of the topic. It may happen that the topic is interesting from a practical point of view, but there is no “science” in it.

Beware of choosing an understudied topic(On which practically nothing is written).

It may seem tempting, but absolute innovation is difficult, you have to prove every comma. Are you ready for this? If you "swim" in the subject, you will not be able to cope without serious scientific guidance. On the other hand, if you choose a topic that has already been the subject of research more than once, you are likely to encounter difficulties in proving novelty, which practically means that your work on writing a dissertation will be in vain.

Justification of the relevance of the topic is one of the initial stages of the study. "Relevance" as applied to the dissertation means the timeliness and social significance of the study. The rationale for the relevance of the topic should be capacious and therefore short.

The main thing is to describe the essence of the problem, i.e. controversial situation that needs to be resolved. Such a situation often arises as a result of the action of new factors (conditions) that can change (develop) the previous theoretical concepts. These may be new economic conditions, for example, “transition to a new qualitative state of the world economy”, etc. As a result, it is possible, for example, to revise existing approaches to the "mechanisms of legal regulation of economic development."

To formulate a scientific problem means to find out known and unknown facts about the subject of research, to analyze the degree of development of the problem. The research problem determines the research methodology, its purpose and objectives. With the right choice of research topic, already at this initial stage, one can assume its theoretical and practical significance, as well as its scientific novelty. Avoid broad topics. Dissertations "about everything" are often in fact "about nothing", they are often superficial and dependent.

Sometimes, within the framework of a dissertation research, it is advisable to determine the development of theoretical positions previously put forward by one or another scientific school as a goal. For example, you can develop an author's approach to solving a scientific problem, i.e. solve particular issues within the framework of one or another previously tested concept.

Let's summarize the above:

The topic should be of interest to you;

Avoid setting the topic too broadly;

The topic should be timely and socially significant, as well as interesting in comparison with other similar studies;

Choose the goal and tasks that you can solve within the time frame set for the study;

Make sure you can find all the necessary sources and literature.

Examples of substantiating the relevance of the research topic can be found in my Portfolio.

And the last advice - always approve the topic of the dissertation at the department(with the participation of the supervisor). No matter how it sounds, there are situations when a graduate student has been working hard on a dissertation for 3 years, the topic of which has not been agreed upon. And the incident I am describing happened not somewhere, but in a respected Moscow university.
